Allen Carstensen began his career in woodworking over forty years ago in the heart of the Finger Lakes region of New York. This idyllic location, with its rolling vineyards and abundance of exquisite hardwoods such as maple, cherry, white and red oak, beech and hickory, served as the backdrop to his education in the craft.
Allen has built and remodeled dozens of homes in the region. Sometimes Allen works with his wife, registered architect Christine Carstensen, AIA, applying her years of expertise on the design side. Whether it’s new residential construction and renovation, quality hardwood custom cabinetry, design/built furniture or one-of-a-kind wood-turned objects, West Hill Woods is the right choice.
One project of particular importance is the Keuka Lake cottage Allen designed and began building in 1978. This family home just steps from the shore is a masterwork. Nearly every surface is made of local hardwoods. It’s shelves serve as a gallery for many of Allen’s unique turned objects — bowls, vases and dishes. Today the cottage can be rented. Learn more
